Witnessing Acts of Compassion Prompts People to Do Good: Study

Does a part of us transform for the better after observing extraordinary acts of goodness? A University of British Columbia researcher thinks so.

In a new study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Karl Aquino and his team found that after witnessing exceptional altruistic acts, people are more likely to perform charitably themselves.

“It produces these kinds of changes in their thinking,” he says, adding that witnessing good deeds also prompts people take stock of their own lives and ponder whether they could be better people.

“They have a sort of emotional reaction—they’re inspired, they feel somewhat awed by the behaviour, they may get severe physiological reactions. A lot of these changes can then lead them to try to do good things for others.”
The study found that most people could recall a time when they had personally witnessed an act of goodness, which had influenced their emotions, thoughts, and behaviour in life.

“This finding tells us that it is not only the evil that men and women do that survives them, but sometimes also the good,” the study concluded.

The Killing Krew

The Old Man kept at his court such boys of twelve years old as seemed to him destined to become courageous men. When the Old Man sent them into the garden in groups of four, ten or twenty, he gave them hashish to drink. They slept for three days, then they were carried sleeping into the garden where he had them awakened.
When these young men woke, and found themselves in the garden with all these marvelous things, they truly believed themselves to be in paradise. And these damsels were always with them in songs and great entertainments; they received everything they asked for, so that they would never have left that garden of their own will.
And when the Old Man wished to kill someone, he would take him and say: ‘Go and do this thing. I do this because I want to make you return to paradise’. And the assassins go and perform the deed willingly. — The Adventures of Marco Polo

  Within The Eagle's Nest
The Old Man built the legendary Garden of Earthly Delights.
The garden lay in a beautiful valley nestled between two high mountains.
Here The Old Man had imported exotic plants, birds, and animals from all over the world.
Surrounding the garden were luxurious palaces of marble and gold, decorated with beautiful paintings and fine silk furniture.
Streams of milk, wine, and honey flowed throughout this earthly paradise, while fountains gushed with wine and pure spring water.
A secret garden with all the delights promised to the faithful when they reached paradise.
The chosen ones were drugged and taken to the garden by night.
When they awoke in the morning they were surrounded by beautiful and scantily clad women;
who lived in paradise,
who ministered to the initiates every need and desire,
who sang and danced and played lovely instruments.
After being allowed to savor this false paradise for a day or so,
the initiates were then again drugged before being taken back to awaken into their reality, a squalid hovel or cave dwelling.
To the young men, it was as if it had been a vivid dream.
At a later time, The Old Man would then sent for his boys,
tell them they had been given a preview of paradise,
and surprised them by telling them exactly what each had been up to while in the secret garden.
So successful was The Old Man in this method of conditioning and indoctrination that it was once said,
The Old Man astounded a visiting dignitary whom he wanted to impress with his power,
by sending for one of his cadre and ordering him to kill himself,
which he immediately did.
When an initiate was sent out by The Old Man to carry out some violent death, the initiate was just as dedicated.
So convinced were these young men that they would be rewarded in paradise,
they never once hesitated to fulfill their tour of duty.

City of People of primitive and barbaric realities

Rite of Pharmakos
Conducted at the seashore, or on the banks of running water that will carry away the ashes, ultimately to the sea. Otherwise, the burning of Pharmakos should occur in such as way that the next day the ashes can be gathered and transported to the seashore or a great river.
It must not take place in a temenos-holy precinct, as it involves all the impurities of which we wish to dispose.
At the end of this rite it is appropriate for a special khernips, or handwashing, before any other thing is set to be done. Having touched an impure thing, the Pharmakos, one would not wish to handle any sacred thing until purified.
At Athens-
Pharmakos was a real human being, or sometimes two:
a man and a woman,
criminal scapegoat,
condemned to death and chosen for their ugliness.
In other Cities of People there is a simalacrum of two Pharmakoi,
a male and a female effigy,
in difficult years,
a Unisex Pharmakos made up the lack of the City of People.
Pharmakos was crafted with combustible straw and adorned with a necklace of figs:
white figs representing the male,
black figs representing the female.
Unisex Pharmakos donned both strings of figs woven together.
Pharmakos was then led all around the City of People standing in a circle, facing outward.
Pharmakos is carried around clockwise outside the circle of the City of People,
as each person 'puts upon' Pharmakos all those things which he or she considers bad,
which she or he wants out of his or her life, and out of the life of the Tribe.
This 'putting upon' may occur in many ways.
The thing to be disposed of may be written down with the paper then shoved into the body of Pharmakos,
it may be addressed in words to Pharmakos, either silently or out loud.
This is a rite in which the emotions of anger or hatred are perfectly appropriate,
because this is the time for being rid of them.
Rage directed at Pharmakos, as the personification of all the bad things in life, is rage to be exorcised.
Hitting and spitting on Pharmakos is to be expected by all.
As Pharmakos has completely been led throughout the vulgar multitude visibly abused, it is then strangled and burned.
It's sole purpose is to rid the City of People of primitive and barbaric realities of their lives,
to prevent those things from doing damage during the rest of the year.
When a society provides no real and personal release of the pressures,
which it puts upon its constituents,
there will be explosions,
and the toll will be terrible.
